Remote Medical Monitoring Device for Home-based Miniature OCT

Low cost, home-based, patient self-monitoring OCT (optical coherence tomography) device

Our lead development project for mobile Health (mHealth) (1) applications will be the Patient Based Ophthalmology Suite (PBOS). In its first iteration, the PBOS aims to improve ophthalmic treatment outcome in patients diagnosed and treated for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME) and other neovascular retinal diseases. The PBOS is being designed to detect nascent disease progression and support patient re-treatment prior to irreversible vision loss due to disease progression.


Key component of the PBOS is the low cost, patient admistered device used to capture changes in retinal anatomy as well as a visual function monitor to assess changes in visual acuity. Network connectivity and cloud based technologies are used to alert the patients and their physicians of disease progression and re-treatment needs.

We have received IRB (IRB: Institutional Review Board)(2) clearance and have initiated clinical study to test specific design elements of the PBOS system. In particular, we plan to evaluate the quality and resolution of assessments taken with the PBOS system in healthy subjects as well as in patients with wet AMD and DME. Results from this study will allow us to further engineer the handheld unit.
